Avalon School seeks to establish a just world by nurturing an equitable school community for students that inspires active learning, social justice, engaged citizenship, and hope for the future.
Welcome to (back to) Avalon! What follows is a scheduling guide and class list for the 2026-2027 school year. Students are encouraged to engage in independent projects or guided, project-focused classes to achieve Minnesota graduation standards in core subject areas. Our daily schedule consists of six project/class hours supplemented by school-wide learning opportunities:
Advisory
daily, 8:55-9:20, 3:30-3:40
Every day at Avalon starts in advisory groups that use the circle process to lift student voices, build community, and respond to the world around us. The day ends with an advisory check-out that gives students an opportunity to reflect on the day and prepare for the next.
Reading time
daily, 1:10 - 1:40
Students reconnect with their advisories after lunch to take 30 minutes of quiet reading time. This is an opportunity to get off screens, reset for the afternoon, and develop independent reading skills. Throughout the year, students will have opportunities to engage in group reading-focused activities such as advisory read alouds, book clubs, and student affinity groups.
Grade-level meetings
once or twice weekly
Students engage in meetings throughout the week with grade-level peers to explore transition opportunities, project skills, community connections, deep-dive academic pursuits, and more.
The expectation is not to fill the day up with classes but to develop a balanced schedule that incorporates projects and classes that embody Avalon’s values: nurturing community, equity, identity, sustainability, and engagement.
